Biography
Daniel Knorr, born in Romania in 1968, moved to Germany with his parents at the age of 14. He now lives and works in Berlin and Hong Kong.
Since 2005, when representing Romania at the 51st Venice Biennale, Daniel Knorr has been one of the most active conceptual artists in the world, working on themes that address the relationship between urban public space and the private sector. In his works he explores historical, socio-political and economic fields, questioning and attempting to engage in discussion in his unique artistic context. He is best known for his installation Expiration Movement at the Documenta 14 in 2017, in which a massive amount of smoke rose from the watchtower of the the Fridericianum pavilion, even causing many of Kassel’s local residents to call the fire service. The aim of Documenta is also to bring us back to the history of the museum, which was destroyed in World War II more than 70 years ago, and to bring about a reflection on the devastation of the war.
