Hou Yijie (b.1996, Chengdu, China) graduated from the printmaking department of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, he currently lives and works in Chongqing.
Hou’s dynamic artistic exploration integrates the emotions and sensations arising from contemporary challenges with the histories, legends, fables, and anecdotes of Chinese culture. Through fluid and precise brushstrokes, he constructs tension-filled spaces shaped by the interplay of societal forces—the imperial court, the hermit’s retreat, and the outlaw’s wilderness. By recreating these spaces and populating them with diverse characters, Hou examines the complex and unstable state of human nature. He reflects on how individuals, in constant conflict with their external environments, must make personal choices—listening to their inner voices while breaking free from dogma and discipline.
