Biography
Hou Yijie (b. 1996, Chengdu, China) graduated from the printmaking department of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, he currently lives and works in Chongqing.
Hou’s spirited pursuit of art revolves around integrating the feelings and emotions arising from real life conundrums, with histories, legends, fables, and anecdotes in Chinese culture. He uses free and easy strokes to create a charged space pulled in so many directions by conflicting social dynamics: those of the imperial court, of the hermit retreat, and of the outlaw wilderness, mixed with the theme of adventure. Hou recreates the space, along with the myriad of personalities within, to examine the irreducible fluid state of human nature, where individuals have to make constant decisions for themselves as they come to grips with the environment, to listen to one’s inner voice without being corralled by dogmas or rules. The job of an artist is not to judge those personal decisions, but to lay bare the complexity within them.
