MANGROVEGALLERY is pleased to present Fetch, a solo exhibition by Yu Hang, opening on June 27, 2026. Featuring recent paintings, the exhibition continues the artist’s exploration of perception, memory, and the self.
The term Fetch originates in Irish folk belief and refers to a ghostly double of a living person. In Yu Hang’s paintings, this “other self” does not appear as a mirror image or a self-portrait, but rather lingers within the logic of the painting’s making—between layers of paint that cover one another, contours that are continually revised, and brushstrokes that are never fully erased. Each mark is at once an act of emergence and withdrawal.
Yu Hang’s practice does not seek narrative representation, but instead approaches painting as a site of perception. Here, color does not serve the image; rather, the image emerges from color itself. Recurring skull motifs no longer function as traditional allegories of death, but become visual vessels continually rewritten and charged with shifting emotional states. Decisiveness and hesitation, emergence and erasure, intertwine on the same surface, sustaining the image in a persistent state of unresolved tension. In this way, painting becomes a site where one encounters the self: as viewing unfolds, the self and its double, the real and the phantom, momentarily overlap within the visual field.
