Biography
Born in Shandong, China, in 1995, Renee Yu Jin received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode lsland School of Design in 2018 and her Master of Fine Arts from the Central Academof Fine Arts in 2022. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Visual and Cultural Studies at the University of Rochester, focusing on the intersection of anthropology and contemporary art.
Drawing from her personal experiences of cultural migration, the histories of China and East Asia, and longstanding social norms, Jin explores the integration of these broader social issues with her own personal sensory experiences. As a “cultural spectator,” she employs various media—sculpture, drawing, installation, and video—to translate the complex relationships in the world into tangible material expressions. Her works often originate from an intuitive sense of “analogy,” activating free associations on a visceral level to uncover multiple selves hidden beneath consciousness, while examining the shared material qualities, trajectories of movement, and social attributes that are often overlooked in everyday life.
