About

MANGROVEGALLERY is pleased to announce its participation in Art Collaboration Kyoto (ACK) 2025 as the guest gallery of WAITINGROOM (Tokyo), presenting the latest works by Hou Yijie, Fumika Tsuchitori, and Rikako Kawauchi in the Gallery Collaborations section.

Each of these artists focuses on the line as a medium of expression, referencing various narrative motifs drawn from mythology, film, and manga.

Houʼs paintings and drawings use dynamic yet restrained lines to forge an aesthetic that blends Asian martial arts with Western fantasy and anime, where the traditional and the contemporary intersect. Through the motif of “two people in close proximity”, which frequently appears in the history of painting, Tsuchitori questions the fictional nature of this medium, in which opposing states or situations such as love and violence, or embrace and domination intersect. Kawauchi, who has been thinking about the connections between the body and nature from a perspective found within the body, by taking her starting point from the sense of otherness and sanctity directed at oneʼs own body, will exhibit mainly drawings that express her own physical sensations. Houʼs clay sculptures and Kawauchiʼs stone sculptures also extend the relationship between the line as a medium of expression and the material.

The three artists bring new perspectives to the viewerʼs sensations by offering an account of their own physical sensations, memories, and cultural standpoints through the medium of stories and narratives that already exist.
